Columbus Cafe
Dive/Neighborhood
562 Green St.
(North Beach)
San Francisco, CA
(415) 291-0818

This local dive bar has a great happy hour: Two-for-one draft beer (at least 10 to choose from) from 5 to 8 pm every day, including weekends! If that isn't enough of a reason to go, they also occasionally dump sand over the entire floor and hang fishing nets from the ceiling. The (less-crowded) Inferno, downstairs, is open on weekends. Dalva
Dive/Lounge
3121 16th St.
(Mission)
San Francisco, CA
(415) 252-7740

www.dalva.com

Dalva is a wonderful place to have a drink. There are a good number of tables (which go quickly, so arrive early), and the interior is almost entirely lit by blue candles. Another incentive to beat the crowds? The jukebox is free until 7 pm! The location -- on 16th, between Valencia and Guerrero streets (a few doors up from the Roxie) -- puts Dalva right in the middle of the "Mish," so be prepared for overpacked Friday and Saturday nights. If you don't like crowds, get there early or on a weeknight. (Jon Setzen)

The Page
Neighborhood
298 Divisadero St.
(Western Addition)
San Francisco, CA
(415) 255-6101

This neighborhood bar feels just like your living room -- if your living room has hot-pink walls and dank wood paneling. But despite being decor challenged, the Page is an unpretentious spot to spend a low-key night or meet up with friends for a post-work drink. The long bar is stocked with everything from microbrews on tap to decent scotches to Jäger shots and there are plenty of tables, bar stools and comfy chairs in which to unwind. The place sports three TVs that usually have a game or two going, and for those who'd rather play than watch, there are two pool tables: one near the bar action, the other in a cozy recessed area, which is also a great locale for those desiring a quieter zone. Molotovs, 528 haight ****

Molotov's
Neighborhood/Dive
582 Haight St.
(Lower Haight)
San Francisco, CA
(415) 558-8019

Formerly the Midtown, Molotov's is one of the few Lower Haight bars where you can get a mixed drink and not just beer. You can also watch the bartenders do their fire-breathing act with combustible liquors. Low, dark and equipped with a pool table and a new jukebox, Molotov's also offers a few tables and booths, and attracts a relatively diverse crowd of rockers and just-plain-neighborhood-folks. Not quite a dive, this is a great place to start your evening. (Josh Wilson)

Place Pigalle

520 Hayes (at Octavia), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.552.2671
A pool room, a dance hall, an art space, a shabby wine lounge. Place Pigalle attracts all manner of would-bes and wouldn't-care-to-bes all converging on this, the tattered living room of Hayes Valley, serving up beer and an impressive selection of wine to the newly disenfranchised.
