Meeting in Geneva, the 47-member body voted 32-1 with 14 abstentions to condemn Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights and slam its attempts to impose Israeli laws in the area as “null and void”.

Canada didn’t vote in favor of the resolution, describing it as “unbalanced”, and European Union members abstained.

The adopted resolution said Israel should "desist from changing the physical character, demographic composition, institutional structure and legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan" and allow the displaced population to return to their homes.

Syria’s delegate, Khalit Bitar, also told the Council that Israel had undertaken a deliberate "Judaicisation" of the Golan Heights following the annexation, changing the Arab Syrian identity of the region's people.
