MITAC memoria

Motherboard Revisions

To find your laptops driver files and BIOS support files there should be letter codes (in parentheses) on the right side of the lower case main label. (Including on the WinBook M series) Letter Codes are - 8640, 8640 P4-M4, 8640C, 8640D4_G4, 8640DGMP, 8640DH/GH, 8640HC, 8640L/S, 8640SC and 8640SH. However, Mitac's service manual calls out the following 8640 sub-models. I'm not sure how each of the above revisions compare to the following motherboards. I have little concrete data on the differences with each revision of the 8640 laptop, but I will be adding more as soon as people help me fill in any missing information.

8640i (Silver)

Desktop CPU's Willimette or Northwood plus Celerons from these families of P4 CPU's. Video memory up to 64MB of shared memory.

8440D (Gold)

Desktop CPU's Willimette or Northwood plus Celerons from these families of P4 CPU's. Video memory 32MB of embedded DDR memory.

8440G (Platium)

Mobile Willimette or Mobile Northwood CPU's plus Celerons from these mobile families of P4 CPU's. Video memory 32MB of embedded DDR memory.

8440N (Caiman)

Desktop CPU's Willimette or Northwood plus Celerons from these families of P4 CPU's. Video memory 32MB of embedded DDR memory.

The 3.06GHz/533 Hypertheading CPU was supported in desktop revisions.

Other Information

Memory in all cases was DDR SODIMM modules and there are two slots for memory.  Maximun RAM is 1GB per Mitac - I will see if two 1GB modules will function if I have time. Memory speed only needs to be PC2100 or PC2700.  The first module is located under the large plastic panel on the bottom of the laptop. (Primary memory module) and the second (secondary) module is located under the keyboard.

To remove the keyboard or to install secondary memory, you need to remove all power (AC and battery) first. Then push the status panel (Panel with ON/OFF switch) to the left until the panel's latches are released from the main case plastics. Lift the panel up and off. Then unscrew the screws along the rear side of the keyboard. Then lift the keyboard up until you can free the ribbon cable from the motherboard. The cable is held in place with the standard friction latching connector that has a small wedging locking bar that presses the ribbon cable against the connectors contact. Pull the locking bar (light color part of the connector) away from the main part of the connector until the ribbon is loose. (about 1/8" or a few mm's)

The 8640 also has a mini-PCI slot for an optional wireless NIC card and it too is located under the keyboard. Brands of wireless card is important and I've had at least one brand fail to install correctly and so do not assume that any old card can be installed -- even if the wireless antenna is in place.

The brand and model of the optical drive is very important since I have been informed that Panasonic, QSI and Lite-On Combo or DVD-Burner drives are the only brands known to function. Even with these brands the drive must be set to Master. Most Combo CD-RW/DVD or DVD-Burner drives do not have a selector switch for M/S and if the firmware is the incorrect version you can not use the drive. Newer versions of the BIOS do not solve this problem.

Many older read-only CD-ROM drives do not seem to have a problem with M/S setup and some DVD-ROM drives do have M/S/C Sel switches and most likely be used if set for Master operation.
