Summary: The life and career of one of the best baseball players in history!Clemente was tragically killed in a plane crash on December 31, 1972 as he and four
others were delivering supplies to the earthquake-stricken victims of Nicaragua. For 18
seasons, from 1955 to 1972, he was a mainstay in the Pirate outfield. He won four National
League batting crowns and ended his career with a .317 lifetime average, 240 home runs and
1,350 RBI. Roberto hit safely in all seven games of both the 1960 and 1971 World Series,
winning the Series Most Valuable Player Award in 1971 when he batted .414 with two homers
against Baltimore. He was a 12-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove Award winner and was the
National League's Most Valuable Player in 1966. In August of 1973, he became just the
second player (Lou Gehrig being the other) to have the mandatory five-year waiting period
waived as he was inducted posthumously into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. That same
year, the Pirates permanently retired his number 21.
