When I get to John Simpson and his band of lexicographers in Oxford, they are working on the P's. Pletzel, plish, pod person, point-and-shoot, polyamorous-these words are all new, one way or another. They have been plowing through the P's for two years, but they?re almost done now (except that they?ll never be done), and the Q?s will be ?just a twinkle of an eye,? Simpson says. He prizes patience and the long view. He is the latest in a distinguished line, the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary, whose names roll fluently off his tongue, ?Murray, Bradley, Craigie, Onions, Burchfield, so however many fingers that is.? A pale, soft-spoken man of middle height and profound intellect, he sees himself as a steward of their traditions. ?Basically it?s the same work as they used to do in the 19th century.
