Summary: In a move that sets the stage for dramatic changes to the Far West Side of Manhattan, state officials last week approved key aspects of a $1.7 billion plan to expand the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The resolution made by the state Public Authorities Control Board (PACB), a five- member state entity made up of representatives of the state legislature and the governor, clears the way for the acquisition of land necessary to facilitate the expansion of the Javits Center. However, those plans have recently elicited controversy from community groups, elected officials, and civic organizations.
The PACB resolution has been widely interpreted as an overall approval of the Javits Center expansion plan, designed by a team consisting of the Richard Rogers Partnership, FXFowle Architects, and A. Epstein & Sons International. The current plan will increase exhibition space at the Javits Center from the current 760,000 square feet to 1.1 million square feet and create a six-block-long super-block running from West 34th Street to West 40th Street, between 11th and 12th Avenues. New features include a 100-foot-high multi-block entry and concourse, the city’s largest ballroom, and a 1,500-room hote
