Summary: At long last, a tough year for the Republicans.
The House is currently comprised of 231 Republicans, 201 Democrats and 1 Independent. There are two seats vacant, those representing California's 50th district and New Jersey's 13th district; the first will be filled in a special election before the 2006 election, but the second will remain vacant. The Democrats would need to pick up 16 seats to take control of the House, which has had a Republican majority since 1995.
For Fall 2006 elections, voters will select 33 Senators (currently held by 18 Democrats and 15 Republicans)
