After the departure of founding member Cesare, the group -- now consisting of Rob B., the Head, drummer Owen If (born Owen Rossiter), and vocalist Cath Coffey -- issued the 1990 single "Elevate My Mind," which became the first British rap single ever to reach the U.S. pop charts. Following the release of the album Supernatural, Stereo MC's toured with the Happy Mondays and EMF before returning to the studio to record their 1992 breakthrough Connected, a sample-free album recorded completely with live instruments which spawned major hits like "Step It Up," "Creation," "Ground Level," and the title track. Throughout several years of production and remix work, the group's long-awaited (and oft-delayed) follow-up remained unreleased, though in 1997, Coffey did at least issue her debut solo single, "Wild World." For their 2000 mix album DJ Kicks, Stereo MC's recorded three new tracks, "Rhino, Pts. 1-3," and finally in 2001 issued a new album, Deep Down & Dirty, after a long nine-year hiatus. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Deep Down & Dirty

Deep Down and Dirty
MC's rapper Rob Birch and arranger Nick Hallam have gone a long way to make music that sounds stuck in a time warp--the late '80s to be exact. "I got to break through walls in people's heads," raps Birch in "Running," one of DD&D 's many seemingly made-for-movie anthems (an old MC's track graces the Blow soundtrack). The title track reclaims the MC's stature ("This ain't the place to test me") over a mix of itchy guitars, wailing R&B divas, and hallucinogenic samples. The obvious single, "We Belong In This World Together," is a brash slab of big beats and Day-Glo summer tripping. Old-school hip-hop tributes "Graffiti Parts I And II" sound a bit dated, but that may be the point. Deep Down And Dirty turns contemplative with the slow drug burn of "Breeze," and the chilled moods of "Stop At Nothing," "Shameless" and "Unconscious."
Is there a place for Stereo MC's' classic hip-hop in a ruffhouse R&B world? Deep Down And Dirty may not get the respect or attention it deserves, but it still proves that the Stereo MC's are still deep and dirty. And they don't need fat and chemicals to do it!
