SKETCH WRITING, LEVEL 2: NOW ENROLLING   PDF Print E-mail

Writing comedy other people find funny is hard, but writing and producing comedy YOU find funny is almost harder, and yet more important. Because without the latter, ain't no way you're gonna do the former.

Welcome to the world of Sketch Comedy. Killing My Lobster styles. We've brought you a few introductory classes in the fine art of sketch comedy writing. Now it's time to take it to the next level.

In a 6-week intensive class taught by one of the cofounders of KML and beginning the first week of May, students will hone and sharpen their comedic voices through writing and realizing the ideas they find funny. Also on tap: understanding and becoming familiar with the process of translating what they find funny... into what others might/will/can't refuse but to also find funny. [Click the "read more" tab below to keep reading...]

Students will be in charge of writing sketches. Rewriting sketches of their own as well as others. And leading sketches they've written through rehearsals toward an invited showcase of those sketches at the end of the class.

Over the 6 weeks there will be 10 classes, as well as potential rehearsal times with Killing My Lobster actors and actresses. Students must come prepared to write. There's no way around that. If you believe you do not have enough time for this intensive class then perhaps look to the beginning class. That one is a lot of fun as well.

The goal is for students to leave with a better sense of how to make their funny ideas/sketches come to life, by introducing a more intense rewrite and production aspect to the class.

Ideally it is the next step for those who have taken the intro class or have some comedy writing experience on their own.

About the instructor: Paul Charney is a co-founder of Killing My Lobster and senior copywriter with San Francisco's renowned ad firm Goodby Silverstein & Partners. He has directed dozens of sketch shows with KML and written and directed short films that have screened at festivals across the world, including Sundance. He's from Manhattan, but his loyalties these days lay with the Oakland A's.

Peter Sinn Nachtrieb wins The Steingbery Award!

Peter Sinn Nachtrieb Wins The Steinberg Award!
Fresh from winning the 2006 Will Glickman Award--meaning that a group of select theater critics has deemed it the Best Bay Area Play of the year--we are proud to tell you that Peter Nachtrieb won the Steinberg Award from the American Theatre Critics Association for Hunter Gatherers! That's basically an acknowledgment from a major theatre organization that Hunter Gatherers is one of the best new American plays that debuted last year. Past winners have included Lee Blessing, Nilo Cruz, Horton Foote, and August Wilson. This is a huge acheivement for Peter--and a great additional notice for the group. Congrats to Peter and thanks to everyone who came and saw our production of Hunter Gatherers last year. To keep up with the work of Peter Nachtrieb, please visit his blog!
